McKinney, Texas - James Edward McCandless passed away February 7, 2023 in McKinney, Texas at the age of 73. He was born to Ben Duncan and Betty Jane (Martin) McCandless on September 27, 1949 in Ft. Worth, Texas. Jim graduated from Richland High School in 1968. Throughout most of the past 50 years, Jim worked at two music stores where he was given the opportunity to also build an independent guitar repair business. In 2006 following the bankruptcy of his then employer Brook Mays, Jim began working full-time on his guitar repair business and created Jim McCandless Guitar Works. Since that time, his business flourished, and he became one of the mostly widely sought luthiers in North Texas. Jim's other passion the past several years was fishing with his brothers. A very special place for Jim was The Guitar Sanctuary in McKinney, where a celebration service is being planned--date to be determined. James is survived by his brother, Tom McCandless and wife, Judi of Eastchester, New York; brother, Bob McCandless and wife, Amanda of Trophy Club, Texas; nephews, Brad and Miles McCandless; and nieces, Kathleen and Simone McCandless.
